Turbul Friulano 2022
Winery

Hand selected in the field April 13th & 26th 2022. These
picks were immediately de-stemmed, tipped into terracotta amphora to ferment as cool whole berries. No sulphur or yeast added. The amphoras were lightly sulphured in July, after complete primary & malolactic fermentation. On August 25th, we pressed the wine. At this point, skins & solids had sunk to the bottom of the amphoras & the clear wine was easily pumped straight into aged puncheons. We decided to delicately rack out of barrels in September 2023, bottling soon after without any fining or filtration. Using a diam cork closure to assist in persistent gentle oxidation of this phenolic plush wine, we seal with glowing wax to complete the winemaking process.

Tasting

Angelica blossom with a mélange of honey, parsley root,
lemon rind & peppery spice. Dynamic with a plush palate from extended skin contact, Turbul Friulano coats the mouth with a silky, sleek & creamy texture. Brilliance beautifully balanced with bright acidity achieved by strict crop levels to ensure fruit rich in acid with thick burnished skins. Delightful with antipasti, raw fish, or creamy pasta. Natural wine is such a pleasure to drink.

Vineyard

In 2004, Quealy Winemakers established 2 hectares of
Friulano in their now certified organic vineyard. We sourced cuttings from Pauline & Denis Pasut’s original Friulano planting in Mildura. This genetic material was from a now extinguished CSIRO collection. Quealy Winemakers have learnt about Friulano from travel & vintages spent in Friuli. An Indigenous variety revered by its local winemakers. Friulano produces big bunches of big berries with thick, waxy skin. Strategic bud & shoot selection over summer to spring as well as careful fruit selection at harvest ensures impeccable quality, acidity & phenolic character. Ripening in late Summer as the leaves fall away, exposed berries plumpen in cool sunshine. Over Autumn, the bunches loosen & oh so gently fray whilst hanging on the vine, each berry darkening to a rich copper gold. A glorious variety for skin contact wine.

FYI

When Kat & Kev met Denis Pasut, he seemed to have the
only planting of Friulano in Australia. Denis sourced the grape material from a CSIRO trial collection of the variety in Merbein, which was infamously bulldozed for a parking lot. Quealy Winemakers were able to take cuttings from Denis’ vineyard in Mildura to plant the first vines of Friulano on Mornington Peninsula in 2004. Still rarely grown in Australia, we are proud to grow & make this luscious variety at our certified organic home estate.
