Musk Creek Vineyard Pinot Gris 2023
Winery

Wines like Musk Creek Pinot Gris beat their own path; bunches presented as a relaxed cluster of tiny, waxy, hot pink berries at harvest on the 30th and the 31st March, complete with high sugar and acid content.

Hand harvested March 30th & 31st. Whole bunch pressed and allowed to naturally settle overnight the wine was roughly racked to a mixture stainless (70%) and a mixture of new and seasoned French Puncheons (30%) where it was allowed to ferment wild without the addition of sulphur. As with Feri Maris we feel the use of barrel ferment help frame the intensity of flavour and texture this site offers.

Maturation took place in stainless steel with just the single new Puncheon (10% of total wine) used. The Musk Creek Pinot Gris had regular batonage both in wood and stainless. The wine was racked mid-November, lightly polish filtered and bottled on December 1st.

Tasting

Youthful Musk Creek Pinot Gris smells of pink fruits, woodsmoke and wild honey.

This vintage palate is as big and round as a hogshead. Those aromas persistent in the palate. A remarkable giant white wine with the paradox of great finesse and poise.

This wine is capable of cellaring for ten years.

FYI
Vineyard

Musk Creek vineyard is revered for Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Perched atop Main Ridge with an elevation of 150 metres overlooking Westernport Bay and heads. The soil is cold clay moistened by springs that affect the whole slope. Persistent cool breeze from Bass Strait protect the delicate, ethereal aromas of Pinot. Musk Creek, planted in 1997, has 2 hectares each of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, and half a hectare each of Moscato Rosa and Chardonnay. The rich soil and elevation delay ripening, which can be dangerous to the crop in cool years. There is a very strict canopy regime of hard pruning to a single arch and early shoot thinning. Of interest, although we never protect against botrytis with sprays, we have never suffered an outbreak in this cool site. We attribute our good fortune foremost to the wind-swept, northerly site with some congratulations to our viticultural excellence.
